The Final Auction
Three months later, the family business filed for bankruptcy. I went to the liquidation auction**, standing amidst the dust of what used to be my life,** to buy back my old tools.
Mom and Dad, having lost their former arrogance, approached me with trembling hands. “Emily, if you come back, we’ll give you half. We can rebuild everything,” Dad begged. I looked at them and at Madison, who looked scared for the first time in her life.
“I’ve already rebuilt everything,” I answered. “But without you.” I took my tools and walked into my new, successful life and out into the sunlight, leaving them to deal with the ruins they created themselves.
